Other Chicago area street running...
« on: April 25, 2007, 08:07:38 PM »
Hello all,

I frequently drive by Cermak Road east of Halsted and wonder about all the street trackage there...That must have been quite an operation because there is quite a bit of street trackage...Up until a few months ago, there was a metal factory that would recieve 1 or 2 boxcars every other day...usually with a couple of of CN/GTW units for power...It was right across the street from Lawrence fisheries...Anybody have any insight to this area?
Also,I know that this may be a little far south for this forum, but around 35th street east of Ashland, there looks like at one time there was quite a bit of industrial trackage and some street running...This would be by the old Wrigley\'s factory that is now closed or about to be closed...A little east of there, but west of Halsted I was surprised to see some street running still in use...A NS train with some tank cars of beef tallow for a meathouse...I was surprised to see it,but very happy at the same time...

I usually stay at a friend\'s near 18th and Canal during  my Chicago visits. I\'ve checked out a good bit of the street trackage on both sides of the Chicago River South Branch. It doesn\'t look like anything is still in operation, switching-wise, to the east of Halsted.

Last April (2006) I toured some of the remaining street trackage in the old stockyards district around Bubbly Creek (South Fork of the South Branch, Chicago River). A great deal of track has vanished in the past 15 years. I did see a tank car operation in the area you mentioned, a few blocks east of the sewage facility at the south terminus of the creek. This picture might be it:

Hi,

I stumbled across a train in the Old Stock yards.  Enjoy this pic from my old 1.3 megapix camera that somehow got accepted:

Matt,

That looks like the same place only you were standing a block or so further east.

Cway, that place on canal is Allied Metal Co.

http://www.alliedmetalcompany.com/facilities.htm

I live a little north of there and have not seen boxcars there since last summer or fall.  Following that same spur to the southwest toward the mainline, a plastic factory used to receive hoppers. I think it was called Premium Plastics.  This was maybe seven years ago when I last saw a car there.  Not too long ago that spur ran right next to the plastics building where semi trailers would dock.  They rerouted the line to swing around the trailers.
