Looking for photos of CTA 2600s being delivered
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:00:09 PM »
I\'m on a search to find good photos of the flat cars that Budd used to deliver the CTA 2600-series cars. I remember seeing these parked at North Avenue to get hauled up the Weber Sub (back when it was still a subdivision). The best pics I\'ve found are a few like this one:

But it\'s not enough to even begin modeling the flat cars. My goal is to have a pair of new 2600s on flat cars for my layout, and the hardest part is now solved with the IHP resin kits. Can anybody help me chase down info on these flat cars?

This was so much more elegant than the lowboys that brought in the 3200 series cars.

The magazine First & Fastest had an article a few issues back on deliveries of cars to the Skokie shops via the NSL and C&NW.  You might want to send a message to the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society which publishes the quarterly (and excellent) F&F.  I cannot recall which issue it was but they sell backissues.

Not sure what got into the CTA but they are landlocked now and everything has to be trucked in.  I took a rare mileage excursion on the CTA in early 2010 that dipped down into their lower 63rd Street Yard and the physical track connection to the outside world appeared to be in place but the two diesel switchers did not look like they had been operated in a long time.

You can see the former connecting track from the 63rd Street Yard using Bing\'s Birds-Eye view.  Put in the coordinates East 66th Street and South Calumet Avenue.  The track and switch are still there but buried in dirt most of the way between the former NYC tracks and the CTA\'s yard.

I know this is a terribly old post but some new pictures have surfaced of this operation:

It's on facebook.  Hope you can see them!

Just saw some pictures in this gallery near the bottom:

Scroll down near the bottom of the page.  There are some shots of the 2600s on flat cars in the yards.  Some shots on page 2 of the gallery as well.
