Passenger Traffic on Lakewood Branch!
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:20:43 AM »
This was posted on the Chicagotransit yahoo group board:

Last night the Chicago Terminal RR ran a dinky consisting of their own switcher (I like their logo) and a business car/historic lounge. When was the last time a passenger car would have been seen on this line or ridden in regular service?

They may be back out with it today or tomorrow. The crew was last seen walking the line towards Diversey around 7 PM after having a conflict with the gym which refused to cooperate in getting cars to move off the tracks. The train only got as far as Webster or whatever the last intersection south of Fullerton is. I didn\'t stick around long enough to see if they forged their way through to end of track or just returned to North Ave. yard. Originally, they had fully planned to traverse to the old Pearless candy factory site.

Needless to say, neighbors were both surprised, excited, and a little stunned (perhaps even concerned and certainly puzzled) to see the train. They wondered what it was all about. One police sergeant (perhaps off duty) showed up, but wasn\'t at all happy with the
situation and had a lot of questions to try to stifle the fun. But the RR officials aboard stood their ground and were determined to defend their right of way to every extent possible without causing too much trouble unnecessarily. From the way they were talking, I don\'t think that they have any intention at all of abandoning that trackage any time soon, and would probably love to use it for something, if feasible. If nothing else, they were all having an absolute ball being out on this rare milage with that little train of theirs.

I drove up Lakewood from Wrightwood and was amazed at what I saw.    As of 2pm today the CTR engine and a private coach car are parked on the old Peerless siding!  I didn\'t have my camera, but walked around.  No one in the CTR engine, but some folks might have been in the passenger car as I could hear the generator running.

As I was leaving someone appeared with a camera.  He didn\'t know about our website, so I\'m not sure if those pics will get posted.  Rumor is the car is staying the night and leaving tomorrow.

Someone in the area please swing by and get some pictures!  What a fantastic turn of events!

As of 9 AM this morning, they are stuck on the Peerless spur!  About 6 cars blocked them in.  They were debating on calling the tow trucks or not.  They had the bell going and were blowing the horn, but nobody came for their cars. When I drove past the health club, probably about 20 cars blocking the ROW.  Don\'t know how far they are going to get today!!

Took, some photos, but the morning sun was not kind...

The CTR engine and the The Caritas car are in the parking lot North of Lake Shore Athletic Club as of 2:30 today.  Pretty sure they are staying there until Monday.

After walking around taking some pictures, I was invited into the car and had a nice conversation with it\'s owner Clark (Johnson?) who also owns the CTR.  Great guy, and he\'s not abandoning the line at all.  Says he has plans to use it at least occasionally and this trip was a bit of a trial run.  One possible idea is a \"Polar Expresss\" train this winter to park by Peerless and offer tours.

He is still there and is very gracious if anyone is in the area and stops by.  I\'ve got some pictures I\'ll post later.

Clark was quite hospitable, and let any of the railfans that wanted to ride the four blocks from Peerless to the lot just north of the athletic club.

The train will be there until midnight, when the health club closes and the parking lot will be clear.  The crew will return at midnight for the trip to North Ave. Yard.

Chuck, which one were you there?

I brought a camcorder and will put to video up on YouTube in the next few days, including views of going down Lakewood on the coach.

The train started moving at 11:00pm, at about 12:15am, the engine went dead after crossing the river.
I took some pictures, go to: http://www.dhke.com/rrus/nitectrr/ctrr.html

Tom, I was the guy in the Jeep.  Sadly I could only stick around a couple minutes.  Sounds like you guys had a blast!!!

Here are a couple shots of them stuck at \"Peerless\".

Maybe they should start running a weekend dinner train! Stranger things have caught on.

What a weekend to be out of town!  Sorry I missed the action, but I\'d sign up for that dinner train or the winter tour mentioned above in a minute.
