General Discussion / Freight Traffic

2 boxcars at Big Bay as of 8/21.  Good to see.  I feel like buying some lumber from them just to help them keep going!

General Discussion / Crazy idea?

I\'ve wondered about this before, as well.  I wonder if we could convince CTR to run a \"charter\" train someday.  It\'d probably be a big hassle to run a passenger car on those city streets, though.

1 box car and 2 of those cars that usually have wood products on them (center post cars, or something like that, I think they are called).  I almost ran my car right into them they were parked so close to Division Street when I made the turn in front of Big Bay.  That would\'ve been interesting to explain to the insurance company.

There are 3 cars at Big Bay right now (as of 7/15), so at least they seem healthy!

This month\'s Chicago Magazine has an article on Finkl steel and the questions about what will replace the property.  In the article, there is a reference to Water Saver Faucet Company building a new factory on Goose Island.  I wonder if they will need/have rail service?

Wow, in 1975 that guy must have been about 5 years old!  Seriously, great story.

I should probably know the answer to this, but don\'t.

Does anybody on Goose Island besides Big Bay receive rail service?  There\'s the big siding near the bridge at North Avenue, but I\'ve never seen any cars in there.

General Discussion / Sugar Relief late for Peerless

I just drove by Peerless today.  Looked like a truck was being loaded with candy making equipment, so I\'d guess ownership is selling off all their stuff.  Too bad.

I think ILSX is the reporting mark for the leasing company that actually owns the locomotives.  Chicago Terminal is just leasing the engines.

General Discussion / Kingsbury Abandonment

I noticed that CTR filed a response (or, more accurately, an intent to respond) the very next day.  Sounds like this will be a battle.

Is it possible they could just rent the track back from Chicago Terminal to store the cars?

I assumed the boxcar on Kingsbury was for Chicago Firewood, but that could certainly be incorrect.  Didn\'t someone on the board here say they were a potential customer?  Kingsbury is one odd street these days.  Everything from firewood to kids\' birthday party places to strippers.

General Discussion / Peerless switching

I drove by on Sunday.  There was no car on the siding, but there was a crew putting dirt in some big potholes that surround the track one block south of Peerless.  Probably some local residents complained about the sinkholes.

They picked it up yesterday.  They did not leave anything behind.  But, I didn\'t ask the crew if they were coming back.  They seemed pretty busy dealing with flagging crossings, towing cars, and picking up debris strewn across the tracks.  I snapped some pics the old fashioned way (regular film) so we\'ll see how they looked when I get them developed.

General Discussion / Will they survive?

I think any service on Lakewood north of Peerless would run into community opposition.  The neighborhood is different now and rail service doesn\'t fit into what the yuppies ideas about their property values.  Goose Island, Kingsbury, any place where rails are currently active (or at least not buried under the pavement) I think is doable.  But, I\'d be surprised to see any more Lakewood service after Peerless goes.
