General Discussion / Chicago Tribune Yard...

Thanks, that makes some sense. That\'s not a time of day I\'d be over there very often.

General Discussion / Chicago Tribune Yard...

Does anyone know what days/times the Tribune receives their rail deliveries?  In all the years I\'ve driven by there, I\'ve never actually seen a delivery in progress.  Do they get the deliveries late at night to prepare for the overnight print runs?

Two box cars outside Big Bay this weekend.

3 cars at Big Bay on Sunday when I drove by.  One of the cars is so far down the road, it\'s hard to believe the guys at Big Bay move the stuff from the car to the store.  It\'s almost a full block away.  I\'m guessing they use forklifts or something.

I\'d love to be there someday when they are unloading the cargo.

I drove by on Saturday.  That is one sickly looking gondola car!

3 cars at Big Bay over the weekend.

General Discussion / Peerless
« on: January 06, 2008, 09:58:21 PM »
Demolition has begun.  Per Tom\'s comment about jobs, I\'m a bit surprised that the local media didn\'t do any stories on Peerless closing, at least none that I\'m aware of.  The place had a storied history, a decent size payroll, and had the unusual rail service, too.  And, the mayor has made a big deal about saving the candy industry in Chicago.  Yet, Peerless just kind of faded away.  Sad.

While driving by on the Kennedy Monday, it looked like Sipi had 3 gondola cars.  I was suprised, because I\'d never actually seen any cars there before.  I tried to get a closer look but couldn\'t get close enough to confirm the highway view.

Hard to believe that just a few months ago I was chasing down a train delivering there.  I\'m glad I caught it while I had the chance.

General Discussion / Chicago Firewood?

I had thought the paint company was gone, but the website is still up showing that location as their headquarters.  www.carbit.com

Your point about Home Depot is interesting.  Do other Home Depot locations use rail service?

So the developers of that shopping center would give them some money for the easment?  Just a theory.  Unless they figure the line might actually develop a customer at some point.  There\'s some paint company still there along Kingsbury that I always thought was a decent candidate for rail service.

Yes, that\'s the company.  But, I haven\'t seen any gondolas outside.  I\'m thinking the STB filing may have been accurate that last year\'s delivery was a ploy.  Someday, when I\'ve got some time, I\'ll go inside and buy some firewood and ask if they are getting any rail deliveries.

Big Bay had 2 cars over the weekend, so they seem to be thriving, despite the building slump, at least for now.

Big Bay Lumber seems to be doing well, if their rail car load is any indication.  They\'ve had cars out front quite frequently the last several weeks.  Now that the winter is coming, I\'ll be interested to see if CT\'s efforts to get Chicago Firewood as a customer on Kingsbury St. come to fruition.

Does anybody know how the plant gets its chlorine now?  Boat?  Truck?  Pipeline?

Is General Iron also leaving when Finkl closes?  Don\'t they \"co-locate\" some operations?
