North Ave Yard Rebuild
« on: August 14, 2014, 11:01:20 AM »
Saw 6-8 centerbeams in North Avenue Yard.  Thought business was really up for the CTRR!!  Passing by again I noticed that the loads seem to be concrete ties.  Looks like they are totally ripping out the yard and rebuilding.

As a bonus there is an orange UP (MoPac) MOW caboose down there!

I noticed that also recently.  My guess is that they are going to "rationalize" the yard and take it down from its current 11 parallel tracks (not including the three mainline tracks) down to probably just three which reflects current business levels, followed by an effort by UP to sell off the excess land.  Since the land is raised well above street level I wonder if a developer would reduce the grade back down to street level and put a new retaining wall in on the remaining yard track area?

On second thought perhaps UP is instead going to rebuilt that rickety track that gradually descends from the North Avenue Yard to Grand Avenue and is used to reach the Tribune Freedom Center and Blommer Chocolate.  It's in terrible shape with rotten ties and an uneven bed-a derailment waiting to happen.

I went by there today, even looked at the area from the North Avenue exit ramp, and there's a LOT of concrete ties offloaded into the gap between tracks 6 and 7 from the highway.  There were still two center beams with a small amount of ties on them, but no longer 6-8.  The caboose is also down by McGrath Lexus on what looks like the track that ends next to People's Gas.  What I find interesting is that there's some MOW vehicles up by Clybourn on the eastern stub track with a brand new signal tower on it.  Could these ties be for the ongoing UP North bridge work, and they're using the North Yard simply because of the space requirements?  There's no spur north until Mryn Mawr, and then it's just a single track, so if a second track was needed for a crane or flatbed, the Bryn Mawr track wouldn't be usable.

You are right though about the Grand Avenue track being in horrible shape.  When do the newspaper trains leave and return to North Avenue usually?

The crane, center beams, and flatbeds have moved to the Avondale MOW tracks.  Some concrete ties have already been offloaded, some are still on the cars.  There UP engine 706 is there with two MOW cabooses.  There's pretty east access to check them out via the U-Haul lot.  A construction company also moved in to the western half of the former Lee Lumber building.

Has anybody seen where these ties are ending up?  UP-NW, UP-N, Tribune track, other?  I took some photos today that I'll see about posting to Flickr shortly.

So...I've been doing a lot of calling tonight and tooling around on Google maps while waiting for people to pick up.  Looks like Google maps caught the mysterious centerbeams of ties in the North Ave Yard:

I'd imagine it's safe to assume that this is where all those ties have ended up:

Thanks for the photo.  I live up by Irving Park, and I didn't even think about venturing to Ravenswood to see if the tracks were laid yet.  Thanks for confirming that these are in fact for the UP-N trackwork like I thought back in August.
