General Discussion / Recession update?
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:48:33 AM »
I was wondering that myself. I believe they were shutting down this April if they stuck to their plan. Anybody know if it looks like the new plant is seeing a lot of activity for opening.

If someone lives close to the new facility they might give us an update if there seems to be activity prepping for the opening.

Still looks pretty active on Cortland, although I don\'t see the number of employees working on the weekends like I use to but that may be as you said the economy effects.

General Discussion / Freight Traffic

Speaking of falling under the freight car I just saw an unbelievable story that was on TV (NBC I believe) about this happening to a BNSF employee in Texas who fell during a switching move and was pulled under the moving freight car wheels and was literally severed in half. Amazingly he survived and is still working for the railroad as a yardmaster, he is now in a wheelchair as his legs could not be saved. The news piece was about how certain people defy the odds and survive horrible tragedies.

I drove by Finkl over the weekend and saw 3 or 4 coal hoppers on the siding behind the buildings off of Cortland. Any idea why these cars would be there? I normally see the gondolas. Made me think of the old pictures where there were coal yards off of Kingsbury.

Kinzie Street Bridge that leads to Carrol Ave where Sun Times boxcars were once delivered may see new life according to the Sun Times article above only for a new reason. Plans are for a Metra connection from Michigan Ave.

I have noticed a lot of firewood stacked down at the south end of Kingsbury at the firewood place. Anybody know if they are getting any deliveries by train as they did early on?

General Discussion / Target develops Wilson Yard

From Crains:

Target says Wilson Yard deal close
By: Thomas A. Corfman Sept. 26, 2008
(Crain’s) — Target Corp. says it is in final negotiations to anchor a $151-million mixed-use development on the Wilson Yard site in Uptown that has been plagued by delays.

And despite the turbulence in the market for construction financing, developer Peter Holsten is again close to arranging financing for the proposed project, sources say. The development, which would also include 178 units of affordable housing, would be on the site of a former CTA repair yard that runs along the west side of Broadway between Montrose and Wilson avenues.

Minneapolis-based Target rarely comments on any location until a deal is done, but on Wednesday a spokeswoman said: “We continue to be very interested in opening a Target store (at Wilson Yard), and are currently working to finalize our real estate transaction at this time.”

Earlier this year, Target expected an announcement in June. Now, the company expects an announcement in “a couple weeks,” she said. She declined further comment.

Maybe they should start running a weekend dinner train! Stranger things have caught on.
