Passed by the North Ave. yard going downtown on the Kennedy. The UP engine was backed out on the spur and the Chicago Terminal engine was firing up. It was throwing a lot of white smoke out of it\'s stack, so much it was coming across the highway. Needs to see more use so firing it up isn\'t such a big deal. They need to get some more customers receiving/sending shipments on Goose Island. Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility would be the type of business that would need to ship out dangerous chemicals, Bishop Box, Restaurant Depot warehouse,Republic windows, Waste Mngmt. With Finkl leaving and Goose Island still a business area as opposed to something slated for residential that is the area to look at.

They store the tank cars there for the chocolate factory spur usually after the hoppers leave.

General Discussion / Best Brewery on Lakewood Branch
« on: December 28, 2010, 06:38:25 PM »

From forgotten Chicago website link has pic of building:

The former Best Brewing Company complex is a good candidate for the “best” brewing remnant in Chicago. Located in the 1300 block of Fletcher in Lake View, it was in operation from 1885 until 1961; quite a long run for a Chicago brewery. Between 1885 and 1891 the complex was owned by several brewers, including Klockgeter and Company, before it became the Best Brewing Company.1

The image at left dates to 1987, when the complex was being converted into a residential loft complex called “The Brewery.” The present-day view shows the finished product; many windows were punched into blank brick walls, but the overall design of the buildings was retained. It is also important to note that this side of the building once faced the tracks of the Lakewood Branch of the Milwaukee Road rather than a street, which explains the lack of windows and face brick what would have been the “business end” of the building.

Designed by German architect Oscar Beyer, most of the buildings comprising the Best complex were built in the 1890s, according to the National Register of Historic Places.

This past Sunday I passed by Finkl. There were quite a few gondola carloads of scrap metal(at least 5)loads. Factory seems to be busy lately.

Went by the North Ave Yard on the Kennedy last night about 8:00 PM and saw Chgo Terminal Engine with the side door open having some maintenance work done by an employee. Cab Light was on, must have just got back from delivering or picking up some cars. The Union Pacific engine was not yet tied up for the night.

Haven\'t seen any cars at Mayfair Lumber lately and I did notice they dragged/disconnected the bumbing post for the spur along the fence in the yard. They were the last customer on the Weber line. I thought they still were being serviced.?

Went past Finkl on Cortland both Saturday and Sunday and the engine was sitting with an empty centerbeam car from Big Bay on the track behind Finkl. Any idea if the bridge is having problems functioning? Don\'t think they have the money to fix the bridge if major problems occur.
