Under the Clark Street overpass, we can make out the message "YOU
WILL BE TOWED RAILROAD IN USE STAY CLEAR OF TRACK".
Looking back towards Clark Street and the Quaker Building, the tracks are older here as evidenced by the timber guard construction.
That's the LaSalle Street overpass.
The building beween the Merchandise Mart/Wells street and LaSalle street are the only older buildings along the Navy Pier Line. Note the loading docks, as there once was a spur that served these buildings.
Under the BMW the sinking asphalt gives clues to the track configuration. Using the maps in the Research section, you can get a better idea of how this area looked.
...but first, let's take a photo through the fence of the old CNW
sign on the wall.
The area under the Merchandise Mart is fenced off, so we'll have to
go around via Kinzie Street…
That's the Carroll Ave bascule bridge, locked in the upright
position since 2000.
After walking around the block, we're now by the river looking back
to where the tracks disappear under the Apparel Center.
The RR crossing sign is still standing, and note the little dwarf signal.
Walking over the river on the Kinzie Street bridge, we can better see where the operator was on the bridge.
This is the overhead crossing at Canal Street. At one time, there
was a 90 degree crossing here for the MILW Rd's C&E Line.
These are the river front condos on the west bank of the river by the bascule bridge.
We're underneath the CNW/UP approach to Northwestern Station. The
double guardrail tracks are the remains of the original approach to
the Navy Pier Line. We're at Clinton Street.
