The map also shows a rail connection between the IC and the CNW via a brige over the Chicago River near where Columbus is today.  Was there really a rail bridge there?

The Deering Line north of Fullerton i mostly a blank, sadly.

John Coleman -- I wonder if that bridge was merely a proposal which never got built?

sure seems like there could have been a bridge near Columbus Ave, looking at this 1938 overhead:

I\'m intrigued as I work in the Prudential 2 building.  I ride my bike in often so have been down underneath the massive \"Illinois Center\" structure, sorta half looking for evidence of ancient rails.  There is none.  :)  However, there are old paver-bricks showing on the ground, laid at a diagnoal relative to the street grid, visible here:  http://snurl.com/s9bc0  hmmm..
