The map also shows a rail connection between the IC and the CNW via a brige over the Chicago River near where Columbus is today. Was there really a rail bridge there?

The Deering Line north of Fullerton i mostly a blank, sadly.
John Coleman -- I wonder if that bridge was merely a proposal which never got built?

sure seems like there could have been a bridge near Columbus Ave, looking at this 1938 overhead:

I\'m intrigued as I work in the Prudential 2 building. I ride my bike in often so have been down underneath the massive \"Illinois Center\" structure, sorta half looking for evidence of ancient rails. There is none.
However, there are old paver-bricks showing on the ground, laid at a diagnoal relative to the street grid, visible here:
