Action on Lakewood Branch this Thurs and Sat!
« on: August 18, 2008, 07:11:20 PM »
A buddy of mine who owns a condo that backs up to the ROW just sent me this, and I think it might just be of interest:

The Chicago Terminal Railroad runs again!!!

Thursday, August 21: 12:00 noon until about 5:00 pm
Saturday, August 23: 8:00 am until about 12:00 noon

It appears that a brick salvage company is using that
train to ship a load of used brick from Diversey and
Lakewood down the train line to another location in
Chicago.

I just double checked with him, and he said the railroad contacted property owners directly about this, so he said it\'s pretty certain this is going to happen.  He was a little worried that all of if might get moved on Thursday though.

This sounds very similar to the load of firewood shipped from the end of the Kingsbury line.  That said, I\'m thrilled they are doing it!  They will probably dropp off an empty on Thursday and then pick it up again on Saturday.

Could this be remnants of Peerless being shipped off? Also makes sense why they were out servicing the line cutting back tree growth.

Thanks for the tip.  I will try to get out there with a camcorder and still camera to record the train.  Kind of a sad final revenue movement by train on that line, but at least it puts some revenue into the bank account of the Chicago Terminal.

I wonder how many cars will have to be towed from in front of the Lakeshore Athletic Club on Fullerton to let the train by?

I\'m not going to get out there today, but I\'ll definitely be there Saturday morning.  Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for spots for pictures along the way?

If someone makes it out today, can you please post a report?  Thanks.

My friend reports that the gate at Lakewood and Wrightwood is currently open...

Normally a good place to catch the action is at Fullerton since trains come to a stop due to cars parked across the tracks at the health club despite warning signs.  It takes time to find the owners inside-or tow the cars out of the way if that doesn\'t work.

Then you can walk ahead to Wrightwood to catch the train entering street trackage.  It\'s a routine that worked for me for the better part of three decades.  :)

It\'s tough to chase the train from Clybourn north to Diversey due to all of the traffic, one way streets, and lack of parking.
