General Discussion / Re: Chicago Tribune truck pics needed
« on: March 10, 2018, 06:32:57 PM »
I found this by accident on YouTube which helped to answer my own inquiry.. It's a ride from Edison Park to Ogilve from 1990. At 12:38 it passes the Tribune Freedom Center. It provides some more evidence of the Trib delivery truck paint scheme I've been searching for.

Thanks Tom. I should have used quotes in my search. Glad to see the herald is on a diagonal. Now I have to find some pics of semis.

General Discussion / Chicago Tribune truck pics needed
« on: February 24, 2018, 10:29:40 AM »
I've spent hours searching for pics of Tribune trucks (semis and delivery) from the mid-90s and have come up empty handed. Was the paint scheme the same as today?

I've seen a pic where the Tribune Herald was on a diagonal. I have not been able to find it again. The only thing I could find was a toy truck dated 1988.

Also trying to figure out what brand f tractors were in use then. Currently they are Sterling.

Any pics would be most welcomed.

Thanks,
Joe

General Discussion / Re: Is Blommer and Chicago Tribune still rail serviced?
« on: September 20, 2017, 08:16:57 PM »
Blommer used to get hoppers on the lower spur as well. Haven't seen that for several years. Also the tank car presently there  which is numbered 66443, I think?, has been there for months. Same car was there last year for many months as well. Maybe it's in captive service?  It gets shuffled around. Sometimes its under the bridge, sometimes next to the building. Wonder if UP moves it or if Blommer has a vehicle like Morton Salt did.

Sad news. With all the changes in the West Loop, the writing was on the wall.  I lived right by this mill for 7 years. Took my 2 year old son here to watch trucks and trains every day. They'd switch out in the evenings. Generally a dozen cars. And then the trackmobile would shuffle around cars throughout the day. I have lots of good hi def video of these moves. One of these days I'll have to post to youtube.
West Loop and River West used to be a real gem. Close to the Loop, parking was easy, and a nice clear unobstructed view of the downtown skyline. Now everything is pushing westward. There are several plans for tall buildings west of 90/94. And I'm sure when the ADM mill is gone there will be another posh condo with some pretentious name like "The Carroll" or "The Ogden".

Thanks Matt. Pics east of Michigan are rare. Are there any other rail pics from that Flickr member? Could you post a link to their collection?

Thanks,
Joe

Good to have you here Reinhard. Great modeling! I hope to build a CNW/MILW Chicago layout someday.

Modeling / Re: Modeling the CNW Navy Pier Line

Chris,
Been over seven years since your last post. Has your layout progressed? Any pics?
I'm looking to do a similar layout. It would be a condensed version between Ogden Ave. and Sun Times with a peninsula to serve Tribune Freedom plant.

Found pic of train on Sun-Times line next to Clinton St. Tower.

Also, a nice pic of Kinzie St. Yard as seen from Sears Tower in '78.

General Discussion / BFI recycling on Navy Pier line
« on: January 31, 2016, 01:38:59 PM »
I remember reading somewhere of a short lived BFI recycling operation on the Navy Pier line. Sounds like the branch was truncated and was simply used as a spur. Anyone know the time frame of this? Where exactly was the recycling?  I'm guessing it was between Racine and May by the Pensy signal bridge.

General Discussion / Re: Blommer lower level stagnant

Yes, Tom, that same exact tanker has been there several months. Today it was finally pulled and a new one set out. Guessing that's corn syrup in those? Does it take that long to deplete the supply, being that the car was there for months? Wonder what happened with the daily hopper loads they used to recieve.
As I write this, my son is eating nonpareils I picked up from Blommer.

Haven't seen a hopper for many months, perhaps even a year. Also, the same tank car (UTLX 664377) has been on the spur next to the building for a very long time. It was, at one time, spotted over by the former Navy Pier spur but ended up back in its original spot next to the building.

General Discussion / CNW Carroll Ave. bridge lowered!
« on: November 19, 2015, 01:03:27 PM »
Happened to catch said bridge in the down position with UP crews doing some work at 10 a.m. Welder was working on the northwest side of bridge at the joint. Got some decent phone pics but too large to post here. Will try to upload to flickr when I get a chance.
