General Discussion / Chicago Terminal - Goose Island
« on: December 21, 2013, 11:45:29 PM »
At the RSCC meeting Friday, our guest speaker was Ed  Ellis, president of Iowa Pacific Holdings.
During the Q&A, the question was how was business on the Goose Island with Finkl Steel gone.
Surprise answer, Finkl Steel is not closed. Yes, most of their operation went to the south side, but according to Ed, Finkl has machinery that could not be moved. So, the Finkl site, is still in operation, not as busy as before, but the Chicago Terminal is still serving Finkl steel.

According to Ed, the Iowa Pacific name was chosen because the original plan was to buy the I&M rail link.

The gallery cars at Elk Grove Village are being stored for a customer. The gallery cars were at Joliet until CN  force the guy out.

Project to reconfigure the Fullerton-Elston-Damen intersection will take some of the former right of way that use to exist in the area. In the pictures, you can see the former railroad right of way.

General Discussion / Re: Lee Lumber moving

The City of Chicago wants the Cragin line for the Mid City Transit Way. The Transit line will be either a L line or a truck only expressway. Plans are not clear. In the plan, the Mid City Transit runs from Mayfair, along the Cragin line , along the BRC to 79thm then turn east and terminate at the Dan Ryan expressway. This plan has been around for a long time.

That bakery (they make Gonella bread) is located on the Cragin industrial lead, near Cicero & Palmer. The Cragin Industrial lead runs from Mayfair (Cicero & Montrose) to Armitage, near Pacific Junction. Until Metra removed the diamond. the line continued south to Lake st (40th st C&NW Yards).
From Grand Ave (near Cicero) to Lake St, the line was paralleled by the BRC.
Currently, the bakery is the only customer on that line, it is switched Monday-Wednesday-Friday. The train comes out of North Ave yard, usually around 10am, gets to Milwaukee around 11:00am and returns around 1:pm.
Attached are pictures from April 2010 of the train.
