General Discussion / Re: Blommer upper level switching
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:56:11 AM »
Hi all,

I'm new here, but joined specifically because of this thread.  I work at an office out by the United Center, and I snapped these two pictures back on June 5th.  They show an older Norfolk Southern, I believe, locomotive pulling 12 or so mixed hopper cars.  There's some Burlington Northern, BNSF, and Union Pacific cars.  The train was heading inbound, and although I've been working here for 6 months, this was the first freight train I've seen on it.  There's mostly Metra, a fair amount of Amtrack, and now this freight train.  I can't say for sure if it was headed to Blommers, but 1. That's a lot of cars for them, but 2. I don't know where else it'd be headed if not Blommers.

As for GM's comment, that business is Elston Materials LLC.  On Google Maps, you can see a tail that used to lead into the business, but right now it's blocked by a ton, literally, of bricks on pallets and the track leading to it looks in terrible condition.

That little section can still be seen on Google Streetview, but I don't know any way of capturing the 3D aspect of Streetview, so a screenshot may just have to do.

It's gone now.  I take the Metra in most days of the week, and I saw them demolishing both buildings several weeks ago.  So much for the alderman not granting them the zoning change, or the developer decided to bulldoze the building even without the zoning.  I hope the alderman gives that developer the finger and doesn't grant them the change just for being difficult and unwilling to work on a compromise.  Too bad HHGregg didn't come to chicago a couple years ago, they could've gone into the old Circuit City space.
