Modeling / Miami / Lance Mindheim modeling
« on: December 09, 2023, 10:44:49 PM »
While looking at some great Miami shots on Flickr from Tom Burke - I instantly thought of Lance's modeling work.. Tom I was glad to see you mentioned & linked to it in your comments. Just wanted to make sure anyone surfing here for modeling stuff has a look at it, it is quite something. His and Pelle Soeborg's work is some of the best I've seen.

General Discussion / photo missions
« on: June 30, 2023, 11:45:57 AM »
Hi all, with this biking habit of mine (now electrically-assisted) I'm spending a lot of time around rights of way whether operating or converted to a path or somewhere in between. If anyone has anything in Chicago(land) that'd be interesting to see a current picture of, post the location and I'll make my way to it for some forum photos. I'm based on the north side near Wrigley, range is city limits/surrounding suburbs. I can also do handlebar mount GoPro video footage. Anybody have any interesting requests?   :D   --Jeff

Not sure this has been posted before .. press the Zoom button to access an amazing level of detail. No idea how accurate it is, but there's a ton of railroad stuff to look at:  http://www.greatchicagofire.org/item/ichi-14892

General Discussion / C&E / MILW track at 1230 W. School
« on: July 27, 2014, 12:43:46 PM »
This plot will become a city park. Looks like the last visible track fragment north of Diversey (that I'm aware of) may be in jeopardy so..  of course I took a couple pics.

A couple years ago when this was an active local parking lot, I wandered in for a closer look and picked up these artifacts. Was amazed, at some level, that they were just lying around after all these years - there hasn't been a train through this spot since 1973 I believe, right?

General Discussion / Kingsbury / C&E South parting shots
« on: September 17, 2013, 09:44:51 PM »
Knowing what was going on, I didn't bike down Kingsbury between North Ave. and Division all last year, as I normally would. Couldn't stomach the carnage  ::)  Well, I checked it out the other day and while there are a few artifacts if you look closely, in general the whole stretch has been scrubbed clean - more so than I was expecting. This is pretty much all that's left:

So I figured it's time to post several shots I took on this stretch during the summer of 2011 for posterity. In retrospect, it's pretty wild how much was left.

Modeling / Trainfest 2012 pics
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:10:08 PM »
These are from Trainfest in Milwaukee, thought y'all might enjoy.  IMO Bill Denton's N scale Mod-U-Trak group continues to be the highlight of the show with a great formula, which includes consistent colors and vegetation across all modules.  It really does look like one huge layout.

These are kinda grainy due to the crummy lighting, oh well.

The Mod-U-Trak group is shown in pics 6083 - 6102.

General Discussion / rail bridge vs. trucks
« on: October 26, 2012, 05:37:35 PM »
OK this is off topic but if you're like me and often bemoan the way trucks took over much of what railroads once did ... this is pretty fun:

General Discussion / bridge rebuilds on the North line
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:01:55 PM »
http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/07/bridge-project-to-affect-metra-up-north-commuters.html

I guess we\'ll see some interesting equipment and operations. I\'ve been wondering how long they\'d let some of these bridges go - Irving Park is so rusty you can see through it in several spots.  I assume they will build for 2 tracks, not 2 + 1..

So these bridges are original back to the grade separation project of the 1920s(?) ?

Just curious - anybody know where this is?  Looks like the Hancock tower visible at top right.

General Discussion / high speed rail

I guess this is technically off-topic but..  does anyone know how this planned route would affect Chicago?  Is it the CNW/UP North we\'re talking about here or the MILW North ROW?

http://www.fra.dot.gov/us/content/648

And where would this \"hub\" be built - near Clark & Roosevelt?

big picture - http://www.fra.dot.gov/us/content/203

I\'m starting to think this stuff might actually get built in my lifetime.  interesting....

General Discussion / seeking switching pics at S&C Electric
« on: July 25, 2008, 05:38:50 PM »
Looking out the window while riding the UP North, I\'ve noticed that S&C Electric, north of the Ravenswood station, had what might have been some interesting switching operations.  Has anyone ever seen any action pictures?
