Modeling / Miami / Lance Mindheim modeling
« on: December 09, 2023, 10:44:49 PM »
While looking at some great Miami shots on Flickr from Tom Burke - I instantly thought of Lance's modeling work.. Tom I was glad to see you mentioned & linked to it in your comments. Just wanted to make sure anyone surfing here for modeling stuff has a look at it, it is quite something. His and Pelle Soeborg's work is some of the best I've seen.

Hi all, with this biking habit of mine (now electrically-assisted) I'm spending a lot of time around rights of way whether operating or converted to a path or somewhere in between. If anyone has anything in Chicago(land) that'd be interesting to see a current picture of, post the location and I'll make my way to it for some forum photos. I'm based on the north side near Wrigley, range is city limits/surrounding suburbs. I can also do handlebar mount GoPro video footage. Anybody have any interesting requests?   :D   --Jeff

Super cool!! The station looms, imposing and moody. Wish there were a shot looking south toward Irving Park; I wonder how far north of Irving MILW locomotives would get.

It was a C&NW freight station according to Tom Burke .. his 1991 pics:

Poking around through there lately (it's a very fun bike path) this looks like it would have been a really interesting and varied freight rail corridor. Lots of ghostly bits here and there to be spotted. Also -- the "Skokie Valley" ROW in general, what a waste it is, north of Dempster. South of there, with a paved path now and my electric bike it's like a superhighway, but that's partly because it's almost deserted. It's a straight diagonal path to the Chicago CBD, you'd think a high/ish speed rail line, maybe with a super cool paint scheme, could easily thrive on relief from the 90/94 slog..  sigh

Shot some more Trib switching videos the other day. Can be found on my YouTube channel:

Great shots .. watching the train shove into the Trib building is a little surreal, like seeing some of the history in the area still alive and kicking, if barely. An anachronism...  sigh  :)

I have that book and overall it is interesting though it would have been nice to see it cover more of the suburbs along the North Branch farther up in the suburbs and the streams that disappeared as a result of residential development like Glenview Creek. I was fishing on the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River in Glenview a few years ago and I was struck by how clear and clean the water looked. As a boy growing up in Glenview it had an opaque, brownish/grey look to the water.

Since I'm posting in old threads..  Tom I didn't know you grew up in Glenview, I did too and it was all east of Wagner. '72 to '80 we lived on Juniper Rd. between Glenview Rd. and Wilmette Ave. The CNW rolling past a half block away was a regular feature and planted the rail fascination in me, for sure -- in addition to the old MILW spur to Hines/Rugens, of course. Anyway I had never heard of Glenview Creek, very interesting. In the early 80s my "gang" did occasionally visit a fun dirt bike "jump" that was just east of Laramie, a half block south of Glenview Rd..

There's another creek that I believe still flows - it started in the back yards of the houses northeast of Glenview & Wagner and crossed under the dead-end of Greenacres Lane before turning east where it flowed randomly above and below the surface, eventually emptying into the Middle Fork. I suppose I wouldn't know any of this if kids didn't spend all day outside, back then..  :)

I recently read Richard Lanyon's Draining Chicago, about the North Branch and the North Shore Channel.  Interesting book if you want to learn about the early days of sewage disposal.  It deals with the north side exclusively and there are lots of old pictures of the Mayfair Division being built in the area of the Channel as well as the narrow gauge RR used to move the fill from the digging of the Channel.

One of the things that caught my eye was the Chicago & West Ridge Railroad. In this post and the comments below I've attached some maps and the description from the Appendices of the book.  Interestingly enough, there is still evidence of this line, as there is rail embedded within Channel Road.  Here's a link showing the streetview:

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.0177812,-87.7092957,3a,75y,223.53h,70.22t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sR0CrWQLZ7Tp4l2_wfaUMEg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Also in the final PDF is a brief description of the MILW swingbridge onto Goose Island being dislodged and falling into the river.

This view of the C&WR RR track section has to be one of the most obscure things I've seen posted here, and that is definitely saying something. Great stuff, thanks.

Service was cut back to Melrose Avenue circa 1981 with enough track left to serve as a tail when working Reed Candy just south of Belmont. Isolated tracks were left in place in various spots north of Melrose including a section at what is now Margaret Donahue Park which was taken up about ten years ago when the park was built. The vision for the original park was to retain the section of track and integrate it into the park with a marker talking about the railroad heritage of the Milwaukee Road in the neighborhood. At some point the Cubs got involved in funding the park which is named after a long time Cubs employee and the railroad heritage was shoved aside.

There was a building supply company that was served by the Milwaukee Road off Melrose alongside the east side of the tracks. At School Street was what looks to be a coal yard and tower. I believe there was also a piano factory near there too.

Awhile back I posted a couple pics of this plot on School when the track was still visible, just before the park was built-  http://chicagoswitching.com/forum/index.php?topic=516.msg2174

Maybe I'm imagining it but I could swear the initial build of the park did include a railroad tribute (as seen in the diagram further down on that page). I recall some sort of rail-bed graphic in the playground surface, aligned with the actual ROW...

This seems like a good place to post this shot I grabbed from the 2nd floor of the new building next to Wrigley. This area has changed *dramatically* in the last 4 years. Here's how the C&E ROW looks now:

Has anyone ever found any street-level shots of the street trackage on the left side of this photo?

That Baby Ruth building is begging to be modeled..

Can't place this at all, maybe IC lakefront: https://ello.co/capnvideo/post/dqf3xcsx303wrxmdr3omxq

I think that second picture is looking south toward the Prudential Building.  Look to the far left and you'll see a loading dock with a sign "piggyback blocking dock".  That looks to be the main building in another shot listed as "IC Loading Dock".  In that pic you can see the same style row of dock lights and the bridge looks similar with that square gusset.

Joe

Joe's right - I knew that looked familiar..  https://goo.gl/maps/XUjiCm39SGnnvAaG7
Great series of pics. I've worked in 2Prudential for a decade+ and have wondered how this weirdly undeveloped plot fit into the layout of the pre-Illinois Center IC yards. There's a small patch of brick pavers visible in the northeast corner of the lot. Looking at the Sanborn maps .. IC had a *lot* of trackage in that area.
