General Discussion / Re: RIP Cherry Street Tracks
« on: September 10, 2020, 12:59:01 PM »
Wow, now that is a depressing sight.  It wasn't too long ago that there would be news and photos here of the
lumber dealer being switched out in that same spot.  Just memories now....

According to Google Street View, there are still tracks on the west side of the bridge, although they look pretty rough and are nearly buried.  On the East side there are actually tracks that come off of the bridge disappear into the tunnel underneath the large building.

General Discussion / Re: So what's left

It was mentioned in another thread that it looks like Big Bay has been abandoned for quite some time now. If so, this would mean there are no customers left on Goose Island.

TBurke,

The same thing crossed my mind when reading this sad news. What is actually left and can it possibly be profitable?  I mean, how often is General Iron actually switched out?

So where is this car actually spotted at?  I thought the spur was taken over by the parking lot.

That is a really nice source of information for that area.  Thanks for posting!  I will probably be up all night now scrolling through the pictures and stories.

I have never really used the Google earth view because it just seemed to slow and cumbersome.  Although that is probably caused by my aging laptop.  I usually just stick to the satellite and street views accessed through the regular map program.

The Dominick's distribution center is just off of the 294 Tri-State, sandwiched between the freeway and a UP yard in Northlake.  The address is 555 Northwest Avenue and it looks like there is still tracks in place for rail service.

8
Whoa.  It that car just sitting on the pavement?  I don't see the rails.

What a shame...

After I read your post, I examined Google maps of the area that you were in.  It looks like the rail access has been cut off to Sipi for quite some time now.  The satellite view already shows the fence blocking the rails and the paving that you mentioned.  I too am also confused as to why the business would make it difficult to resume any type of rail service in the future.  It seems like companies are so quick to abandon their rail service these days, as if they can see into the future and know for certain that it will not make financial sense as a shipping option.

Wow, those are some great shots.  Thank you.  I feel sad now though...

Wow, those are very nice.  I especially like the shot from the cab.  Thanks for sharing.

Does Blommer continue to receive deliveries on the lower spur?

Those were the days my friend.  Those were the days...

Does anyone else here find articles like this just a little depressing?  I hate to see any rails being taken up, even if they have been abandoned for years.

I spent a little more time looking closer at this area with Google satellite. It looks like there may be a few more industries on this line between the light rail and the east end of the branch.  There are at least two more switches that have tracks diverging south.  The spur at Keith and Carroll may in fact go inside of the large warehouse on the side of the street.  Maybe there is some traffic on this line after all!

Also it looks as if this line ran North all the way to Crisp road and beyond.  Looks abandoned though!
