This past week they were still servicing Peerless. The covered hopper was replaced by a tanker of corn syrup I guess. Don\'t know if they picked it up Thursday (3/8). Wonder how many more deliveries are expected?

Try This

Otherwise if you go to Chicago Historical Society under internet resources under Daily News Pictures type in Goose Island for search criteria.

Just got the MRHA article you wrote on the Deering Line. It was a great article and a lot of great pictures from that time. I noticed they were photos from a collection. Were they all from the Chicago Historical Society and if so can they be viewed at the CHS?

One other question, I would like to get a hold of the article you wrote in 1995 on the Lakewood line and I noticed they are sold out. Is there any way to get a copy of this either from you or MRHA even if it is a photocopy, I would really appreciate it?

Any other articles you know of covering our favorite area of service?

Here is another article concerning the fate of Finkl. Does not look good for business in the area. Amazing number of jobs lost in the area between 1988 and 2004. Just looking at the disappearing rail customers in the area verifies that statistic. Hopefully a new manufacturer will be interested.

General Discussion / Crain article about Gutmann Tannery & FInkl

Hope this link goes through otherwise you may have to register with Crains. Gutmann tannery is closing. Another piece of area history is disappearing from the Deering line. Seems like a lot of activity going on all of a sudden. The tannery started in 1878 and it looks like residential developers have their eye on that property along with Finkl except the article mentions that Finkl is in a PMD that doesn\'t allow that development. Only time will tell what the City\'s intentions are. The river real estate is a hot commodity now and there was talk that the Mayor wanted a bike path that went all along the river from downtown all the way north.

I also notice lately that the scrap yard across from Finkl on Cortland looks unusually empty lately of scrap metal almost as if they are cleaning it up prior to selling it off. Anyone have any information on that? Here\'s the link.

General Discussion / 2/1/07 Last Run to Peerless, Not C&E Line
« on: February 08, 2007, 04:14:10 PM »
In addition to the question about ripping up track that I posted on the other topic I was wondering if you knew if abandonment was filed for the old track that went north past Peerless to Wrigley Field. Did the Milwaukee Road/Soo file abandonment on that portion back in the 1980\'s and that is why the track was torn up.

Also do you know if any petition for abandonment has been filed for what is left of the Kingsbury line between North Ave and Division? I assume the portion that went past Division St and disappeared probably had abandoned status also?

The reason I ask this is because from the pictures you have posted on this website of Goose Island, the City just started placing street signs in the middle of track that went to Azco Salt and it seems they don\'t honor the fact that even though the track is not in use you still can not obstruct it in any way.

Does that mean the City or developers can not start tearing up the track leading to Peerless?

Is this new customer down Kingsbury south of North Ave or before the split to Goose Island/Kingsbury street?

Can you write out what the sign said? I am having a hard time reading the dates for the various railroad service, thanks.

Also, is the property been sold already or are they first putting it up for sale?  Thanks.

I have a question regarding ownership of railroad land if anyone has an idea. On the Milw North line by Sears (Cicero & Irving Pk.)they are putting up a new home development on land adjacent to the North Line tracks just south of the Mayfair station. The homes are not sold but are 99 year long term leases making me think that the CP railroad owns this land that once was served by the Milwaukee Rd. I wonder how this works out on Goose Island also with all the new industries. Did the Milw Road sell it or is it all long term lease that is controlled by the CP. This may dictate if train operations ultimately stay in the area or if this will just be a historical website in the near future instead of reporting on ongoing operations. If the Finkl area goes I don\'t believe the line will exist just for Big Bay lumber. The Peerless closing really ends an era. The year 2007 is not looking good so far for us railroading fans of this area.

Boy, that is bad news. Looks like the CP knew this would happen.
This will be the end of the Lakewood line as I guess the residential is winning over the business end. Is Peerless moving to a suburban site or just going out of business?

What is the Spalding Patrol Job, what area and businesses served?
