Hard to believe that trip was 10 years ago.  It was a very memorable event, and somewhere I have a lot of great photos from it.

Thanks,

Dan

General Discussion / Erie Railroads\'s carfloat op on Kingsbury/Erie
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:11:39 PM »

I stumbled upon this scanned article along with pictures showing the Erie Railroad\'s carfloat operation at Kingsbury and Erie st, and the one at Webster st.

File can be found here:
www.jon-n-bevliles.net/RAILROAD/articles/ra-v63-n18b.pdf

For some reason it doesn\'t display correctly using Preview in MacOS, but works fine using Adobe Acrobat.

Has anyone seen a track diagram of the site?  I looked up Sanborn maps of the area to see if they showed this facilty, but the ones I found were either too early (~ 1905) or too late (1940s - 1950s).

Does anyone know the details of any sort of interchange with the Milw at Kingsbury/Erie?

General Discussion / Interesting article about Ogden av on Goose Island
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:07:43 PM »
Hi guys,
I stumbled upon an interesting article about the extension and later removal of Ogden ave on Goose Island.  While not directly railroad related some might find it interesting.  There are also a bunch of interesting old photos and maps on that site.

General Discussion / Google maps street view of Chicago

Hi guys,
I just wanted to mention that Google maps now has street view of Chicago, and includes coverage of Goose Island, North Ave yard area, and some other railroad spots.  The quality of the images is pretty decent when zoomed in.  Should be useful for modelers who aren\'t in the area.

General Discussion / Chi Switching Group Outing for April 2007

Joe,
I\'m guessing they delivered that TBOX car to the ex-Midwest-Zinc spur just to claim their territory.  I\'m thinking that the eventual destination of this car is Big Bay Lumber.

I\'ve seen photos from the past where either the same TBOX car or one very similar to it has been heading there.

see this pic from 2006:

Hope that helps,

Btw, I plan to submit some of my pics from the photo outing to the site in the next few days.

Good times were had at the outing.  Four of us went all over the area and got many good pictures of the Chicago Terminal switching.

I\'m sure one or more of us will be doing a writeup and submitting some pictures soon.

Cway,
here is a link to google maps showing where this spur was located:

The spur ran through the middle of that parking lot, or rather the parking lot was probably built around the track.

General Discussion / CTA frieght service
« on: March 14, 2007, 05:40:58 PM »
Another way of finding business that may at some point had rail service on this line would be to look up Sanborn insurance maps of the area from 1920-1940.

If there is interest in this I might go through the Evanston maps.

One business with a spur that I remember seeing on the Sanborn maps was a quite large Oil/Fuel dealer at the site of the current Jewel-Osco on Chicago Ave / Greenleaf St in Evanston.  The other day when looking around there I felt like I could see where the spur may have come down from the raised tracks.

My vote would be for the Tuesday because of the chance of seeing ops, but Sat/Sun would work for me as well.

Any update on when this outing is taking place?

I would be very interested in joining as long as there is a few days notice so I can plan taking vacation time.

General Discussion / question about MILW ex-C&E trackage
« on: October 29, 2004, 05:11:58 PM »
Did some digging around and found the answer.  I\'m finding the C&E stuff pretty interesting and will continue to see what other info I find on it.

General Discussion / question about MILW ex-C&E trackage
« on: October 25, 2004, 11:53:43 AM »

Hi,
I was looking at the overview maps of the Milwaukee road tracks in Chicago found on the web site, and started wondering a bit about the ex-C&E trackage.  Did those tracks join up with the now CTA red-line tracks just north of CTA\'s Sheridan station?  Is the red-line perhaps running on ex-C&E tracks from that point on up to Evanston?  Did they run parallel?  Any idea where I could find more C&E information?

Thanks for running the Chicago Switching site, it\'s a great resource.
