Thanks for sharing.
Is that a former station with the Skokie signage?

General Discussion / Southside Switching?
« on: January 28, 2021, 04:52:41 PM »
Hello all, hope everyone is staying safe.

Just wondering if there is any update on a southside switching section to the website?
I remember it being discussed a couple years back.

General Discussion / Re: New Chicago Terminal Picture

I wonder if Iowa Pacific's is still having financial issues?  If so maybe they hold on to it and use it to their advantage? Write off the loss, make the company look larger than it is.

On that note, how does the ownership of the Goose Island/Finkl/Street right of way work?  Can that be sold to the developers?

It is odd that UP has not sought to formally abandon the Navy Pier line including the bridge which they lower once a year and run a hi-rail truck over it.

Do you think this is done so they can claim the ROW and sell it for money, as opposed to the city coming in and taking it?
Kind of like when the Chicago Terminal ran gondolas to the firewood dealer so they could claim the line was still active.

Any ideas why they would have been down there?

General Discussion / Blommer Switching

I was a couple of blocks away and couldn't get close, but the UP was pulling the tank cars out of Blommer this morning.

I was driving down Grand yesterday and was shocked to see Blommer has three tank cars on its siding!

General Discussion / Re: The Lyons Belt - A Little OT
« on: January 31, 2018, 10:31:36 AM »
Thanks Mike, I remember those photos from years ago!

I read about the line going all the way to the CB&Q via 1st Avenue, but according to Historic Aerials it does not look like that ever existed.

I agree, it is shocking that none of those new warehouses are rail served.

General Discussion / The Lyons Belt - A Little OT
« on: January 29, 2018, 01:53:09 PM »
Hey everyone, Happy New Year!

Things are a bit slow so I thought I would ask about something just a bit outside of Chicago... The Lyons Belt.
I have noticed that slowly much of The Lyons Belt around Lyons and McCook is vanishing.  I believe this was an actual railroad called "The Lyons Belt" that later was taken over by the Santa Fe.

Does anyone have any information, photos or track diagrams of this line?  I know it went along first avenue to the quarry, but it branches off towards the former Reynolds Plant and Pilet Brothers.  I always remember seeing the IHB switching those industries, so not sure where that branch went.

Just wondering about a local switching branch I grew up around but know nothing about!

Thanks,
Chuck

Blommer seems to get a new tank every month or two.
I still see switching at the Trib, usually around 9-10AM.

General Discussion / Forest Park Branch Track Diagram?
« on: May 04, 2017, 12:55:08 PM »
Hello all,

Sorry a little off topic...

I want to model a small shelf layout based on the IC/CCP/CN Forest Park branch from 16th Street to 12th Street.  Kind of curious what the track layout may have been over the years.  Does anybody know where I can locate a track diagram of this area or possibly Sanborn maps?

Thanks,
Chuck

General Discussion / Lumber District Activity
« on: July 22, 2016, 02:17:36 PM »
I was heading down Ashland this morning and saw something odd!
There was a crew looking around the crossing.  Just west of Ashland was a large MOW hi-rail pushing two flat cars with about 6 pieces of panel track.

I assume they were checking the crossing for any obstructions.

Does anyone know what is going on with the line?  The scrap company that used to get all the gons has been completely removed.  The street and track have been as well... Are they possibly laying this track there?

Have a good weekend,
Chuck
