Nice capture. Back in the days when they still had a healthy amount of business as shown by all of the boxcars. Lou Gerard posted a picture a few days ago of a UP crew with just one boxcar for the Tribune...

Those were recorded in 1080p so make sure to check that in youtube settings. Your default might be set lower

General Discussion / New youtube videos of Chicago Terminal on Goose Island
« Last post by haggar on March 06, 2021, 11:28:42 PM »
Finally posted some videos to YouTube (my first time).
Caught this at Big Bay back in 2/22/13. I had to speed home to the west loop to grab my video camera. This was before I had a decent camera on my phone. I was only able to catch them leaving Goose Island. Wish I captured more but better than nothing.
Unfortunately, this is the only video I was ever able to get of this operation

Thanks - this is great!

I don't recall the business just north of Belmont served by the track coming off between Melrose and School. That is, I don't recall ever seeing freight cars here in the 1970s. That said I turned 9 in 1980, so not sure I'd really remember. I do have memories of Milwaukee Road switchers crossing Melrose.

I posted a new track diagram from the Milwaukee Road that shows the C&E Line from Altgeld north to School yesterday on Flickr.

For those who have not seen them before or do not follow me on Flickr there are a number of vintage track diagrams posted in this collection that cover the C&E, Deering, and Bloomingdale Lines plus Goose Island and more.

Modeling / Re: HO scale modeling notes - Griswold crossing signals, MILW Thrall caboose
« Last post by TBurke on February 24, 2021, 06:41:13 PM »
I'm in a "deep" research phase right now, in part seeking out suitable models. A couple things of note that I've come across lately:

Griswold crossing signals

Milwaukee Road Thrall cabooses

I have no stake in any of the companies above, but was happy to find these very specific models.

Next up: finding suitable 1970s era CCLX corn syrup tank cars. No easy feat - so far Tangent seems to have something close, but not exact.

Best,
Ethan

Good research. I use NJ International N-scale crossing signals on my two dioramas including cantilevered signals to represent what the Milwaukee Road used at the busier crossings like Belmont and Addison. It was years ago but I ordered mine from Walthers.

Here's are images of a Griswold signal on the C&E line on Lakewood by Peerless.

And another one I believe, this time at School Street-

Modeling / Re: Lakeview Racine Fuel/Oil info?
« Last post by Ethan on February 24, 2021, 03:00:03 PM »
Tom,

Many thanks - I just received this book and yes indeed there is a decent aerial on page 33! Thanks so much. This was long gone before my time, but the grain elevator towers (?) just north of Melrose are intriguing.

Funny enough I think I've bookmarked nearly all of John Smatlak's photos on Flickr related to the C&E. Great resource for modeling. I've even pinged Tangent about some of the unique tank cars seen delivering corn syrup in the late 70s, early 80s era.

Again, many thanks for this pointers! And I really look forward to your third module whenever it comes into being. I'm slowly working on my Athearn Genesis MP15AC and hope to post photos when complete (mostly redoing decoder/sound/lighting and perhaps some details).

Thanks Chuck, great suggestion.

I had looked at the options and unfortunately the granularity of the photos ain't great, which is of course not too surprising. It is better than nothing, but most detail is had to discern.

Best,
Ethan

Ethan-

There is a crisp, aerial photo of the line north of Belmont including of Racine Fuel in the book The Milwaukee Road in Chicago which is back in print. I scanned a photo of it but this site limits me to 500K attachments and it is 3.5 MB in size.

I will try to send it to you via FlickrMail.

You will probably want to look at the images of John Smatlak on Flickr as he lived in that neighborhood in the late 1970s and has many photos of the C&E line.

I make no money from that book where I was the lead author. I recommend it for the many aerial photos from the McCoy collection (he worked for the Milwaukee Road).

I planned on modeling the "gap" between my two N-scale dioramas which would have gone from Belmont north to Eddy but I don't have the space to put a third diorama at this point. I purchased an N-scale set of CTA 4000 series L cars to place on a bridge over the Milwaukee Road line by Racine and Newport.

Thanks for posting your research. Always helpful for modelers..
I intend on modeling the Tribune Freedom Center and the CNW low line from Sun Times to Ogden. Maybe Goose Island or Kingsbury if I have enough years left in me :)
You posted some video of Bob Rivard's layout. I was fortunate enough see it in person about 20 years ago when the Soo Line Historical Society held a convention near his home. Very impressive.
