General Discussion / Trackage South of Grand Ave.
« on: November 07, 2004, 11:00:09 PM »
hmmm....good question.  The health club parking lot has some rails still showing in places, and signs that in others the rails were just paved over.

I believe Bill Denton models three tracks in this area on his Kingsbury branch layout.

We\'re always interested in any info you can find.

Perhaps Tom Burke can shed some light on your questions.

Mark:

To answer one of your questions:

It was called the Deering Line because it\'s northern most customer was the Deering Harvester Works at Damen and Diversey.  Sometime in the 30\'s, it was cut back to Fullerton.

re: update on strawberry line name

Tom Burke has a contact that reports that the Strawberry Line was a nickname for the C&E Line.  The Milwaukee Railroader and the MRHA is still referring to the Deering Line as the Strawberry Line, a possible mistake dating to the 3rd Quarter 95 issue.  Recently, I\'ve been told by Otto Dobnick (a photographer that contributed to this issue) that he knew an engineer that always knew the Deering Line as the Strawberry Line.

Can anyone shed some light on this??

Ron,

Do you have any plans for the Kingsbury Branch?  Are you going to build the same stretch as mapped in the April 75 MR (the area that Bill Denton models), or are you going to shoot for a few blocks north?

Here\'s a list of all of the articles:

\"Soo\'s Street Switcher\"; Mike Abalos; Pacific Rail News, November 1990.
\"Soo\'s Street Switcher\"(part II); Mike Abolos; Pacific Rail News, February 1991.
\"Freight on the \'L\'\"; Walter Weart; Railfan & Railroad, February 1988.
\"Evanston via Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul\"; James Buckley,et.al; The Milwaukee Railroader, June 1984.
\"Milwaukee Road\'s Kingsbury Branch\"; Randall M. Willis; Model Railroader, April 1975.
\"Milwaukee Road knocking at Chicago\'s Backdoor\", Tom Burke; The Milwaukee Railroader, Third Quarter 1995.

I think that Railroad Model Craftsman mentioned the swing bridge in the April 2003 issue.

What do you want your profile name to be?

Frequently Asked Questions / When can I see trains on Lakewood Ave?
« on: December 02, 2003, 02:06:53 PM »
\"My suggestion is to hang out in the area on Tuesday or
Thursday to wait for the train.  It normally runs up
to Peerless from the Finkl Steel area between 11AM and
2PM.  You may want to wait at the point where the
track forks off near the northern end of Kingsbury so
you will know when it\'s coming.  The Peerless job is
handled at the same time as the Finkl Steel job, and
the train exits a gate across Kingsbury to head north.\"

Travis,

Peerless is switched Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 5:00.  Also, be sure to check out the remains of CNW\'s Navy Pier Line and Blommer Chocolate.

Enjoy your stay in Chicago.

Mark is referring to a possible error in the 3rd Quarter 1995 The Milwaukee Railroader article.  What the editors refer to as the Strawberry line probably should be called the Deering Line.
