General Discussion / Re: Visible track crossing Halsted

No problem Tom.  I also took a couple pics.  The next day I was going to take pics from the Storage Mart roof, but the road had been paved.  And yes, I too noticed that the track is visible under the parking lot pavement where the billboard is.

Yes, everything is blocked at North Ave. Yard.  Half of the tracks have been torn out of Grand Ave. Yard and I usually find it empty.  Think there might be 4 tracks left.  Sometimes find them switching around 10 a.m. or so.  Several times I've seen them leave the empties and return in the afternoon to retrieve them.  Other times the cars have remained overnight.  Never seems to be a set pattern.
As for Blommer, I've seen two moves done within one day.  Also have seen hoppers sitting alone in Grand Ave. Yard.  Just the other day they pulled all the tank cars that have been sitting on the old Sun Times lead.

Today, while leaving my elevator maintenance stop at Storage Mart (1015 N. Halsted) I noticed that the road has been graded and the old brick street is visible along with a track crossing Halsted at Hooker street.  I believe this was mentioned recently.  I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

The pic with the C&E Bridge Ray is referring to is:

Thanks Ray. Didn't even notice that in the background.  Not too many images of the bridge around.

Was looking for some actual railroad cars on the above posted link.
I see that TribuneFreightFanatic already posted the Rock Island gondola on the Navy Pier line.  Here are some others:

Newsprint boxcars for Sun Times and Tribune at State St. yard (Still can't figure out that name, it's nowhere near State St.)

Mike's newly found pics of Wallace Press made me search for more and I found a nice collection of Chicago stuff on flickr.  Haven't found actual train pics but the first page has lots of Goose Island and Kingsbury images that show trackage.  Also check out the great '68 pic of the Hancock under construction.

Great pics Mike.  Good idea to group them together Matt.  I always seem to be just a bit too late. I have that former Ward's building on the southwest corner of Chicago and Larrabee on my elevator maintenance route.  I have some other buildings on Kingsbury and Goose Island.  Would have been nice to do some railfanning while at work.  I also used to have a route further up north and just missed out on the Weber and Skokie lines.

Tom,
I did see that too Peerless run, it was on the "190 North" show.  If you go to the web site you can search old shows and I think the episode was called Sweethome Chicago.  The Soo switcher was white with the large black "SOO" and had the red cab.  I emailed them asking for a copy twice and never got a response.
I used to work the night shift and would always catch the midday news on channel 7.  The intro had the showed the front of a red Soo loco with the white speedlettering logo and had the brakeman in front waving to the camera.  Looked like it was on Kingsbury or Cherry.  Wish I had taped it.

I think it was back in mid to late 90s, the ABC 7 mid-day news intro had a clip of that SOO 2550 with the switchman.  Tried searching on youtube but haven't found anything yet.  Will post if I do.

A while back I found a pic on the Library of Congress site (I think) of C&NW diesels at the roundhouse that is mentioned.  I searched again under just the other day and could not find it.  Should have saved it way back when.

David has tons of cool Chicago pics. Interesting to see how much the city has changed.  Of course, lots of railroad pics too.
